NEW FREEZING WORKS.

The -Colonial Consignment - and Distributing Company, Ltd., in annual, review,, remark that a surprising amount of enterprise continues, to be attracted to the erection, of,new freezing .works. There, are in New; Zealand actually in operation 32 establishments, •with a total capacity of 87,000 .carcases of:.mutton per day r in addition' to 1340 head'of cattle. Many of these have in- 1 creased, or are about to iincrcasie, their capacity. Nevertheless, there are' proposals afoot for the erection of no less than nine, additional works, all! in, the North Island. As the establishments in the North already number .11,• there is strong presumptive evidence: that thereis no crying need for some of ! -Hhe proposed works. It is interesting to compare the above figures with the whole of Australia, where there are in operation 36 freezing works, with a total daily capacity of about 81,200 carcases of mutton and, 4100,.head o f. : cattle. A fair number of the larger works :have taken; steps to increase their capacity during the year, and the new' Works Vat Brisbane have been opened. Negotiations have been 1: successfully completed '"¥ or. Works'! to serve the Northern .Territory at Dar : win, and small works have been equipped at Shepparton, in Victoria. , Argentina supports at present 11 works, capable of dealing with 28,000; sheep and 6400 cattle per day, ; but< be- \ fore, the end of the . year additional large:works are likely:to be in Operation at Zarate and La Plata, and. two works are in. Course of erection! in Pata--gonia and Chile. Uruguay remains' ade : quately provided with two' works, with an aggregate capacity of about 6000 iheep and 800 cattle per day. - ] The works in Venezuela are at pres-j ent equipped for 120 cattle per day, but have recently changed ownership, and will probably be enlarged.
