HONOUR FOR HEROES.
NAVAL MEN DECORATED. H.M.A.S. SYDNEY'S MEN INCLUDED IN LIST. The Prime Minister lias received the following message from die High Commissioner: — LONDON, April 9. The Naval Honours List contains one Companion of the Bath a one Victoria Cross, five Distinguished Service Orders, seven Distinguished Service Crosses, three Conspicuous Gallantry Medals, and 32 Distinguished Service Medals. The- latter distinction includes six men from 11.M.A.5. Sydney for their services in the action against the Euiden. Twenty-one officers and men have been honoured for their 1 services in the operations against submarines which have been sunk. (Received April 10, noon.) LONDON, April 9. . The "Gazette" announces that Captain Kelly has received the Companionship of the Bath for chasing the Goeben and Breslau on August 6 and 7. The Goeben could have turned and sunk H.OVLS. Gloucester at any time, but apparently was deterred Jby the Plfiucester-s bol&ttess, which gave the impression &*&
help was close at hand. This combination o£ audacity, restraint, and unswerving attention to the principal military object in holding on to the Goeben without over-tempting her, constitute a model naval episode. Naval Commander Ritchie has been awarded the Victoria Cross for most conspicuous bravery in commanding the operations at Dares Salaam, in German East Africa. . Although severely wounded, he continued on duty, an inspiring example, until his eighth wound rendered him unconscious. '
