(Received April 10, 8.55 a.m.) LONDON, April 9. 'A German submarine chased the Holt liner Theseus off the Scilly Islands, Cornwall, England. . The submarine signalled the liner to stop instantly, but the Thesus w r ent full speed. The submarine opened fire with a machine gum > and subsequently fired seven shells from a 3in. gun. Five of these struck the liner, but all were above the water line, and nobody was injured. > Then the submarine vainly tried to get on the Theseus's quarter, in order to be able to launch a torpedo. The chase lasted three hours and 40 minutes, and the distance covered was J57 miles. -Finally, when only 250 yards distant, a heavy sea prevented lier from"using her torpedo, and the submarine abandoned the chase. The Thesens is a steel screw passenger ship of 6724 tons, commanded by Captain J. W. Smallwood. She is a comparatively new ship, haying been launched in 1908 at the yards of Workman, Clark & Co., Belfast. She was 'built to the order of the Ocean S.S. Co., Ltd., for whom A. Holt & Co. are managers. r< ,
