Mr Charles Connolly, of Port Chalmers, has invented a clever contrivance for destroying submerged submarines. It is claimed that by means of this invention a submarine can bo destroyed under water. The missilo of destruction is fired from the attacked ship and speeds downward at the angle at which it leaves the ship from which it is discharged. It may be discharged from a ship's gun or otherwise, and explodes on striking the object it is aimed at. The model is being sent to Mr Churchill for the consideration of the British Admiralty. To-day's river report states that the Waimalcariri North and Opilii arc clear, the South "Wai'iiakfiriri discoloured, the Raugitata and Waitaki dirtv, and the Ilakaia fishable. An evening athletic meeting will be ludd at Lancaster Park on Tuesday next.. Three events will bo contested over distances of 100 yds, 440 yds, and two miles, Entries aro being received by Mr W. H. Doun, United Insurance Co., 155 Hereford Stroet.
