SWIMMING.

MEETING OF COUNCIL.

The Council of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association met last evening, Mr T. F. Bowler presiding. . There were also present:— Messrs .7. H. Knudseu (llawke's Bay), .T. R. Buchanan (Nelson), F. Stokes (Canterbury), C. C. Bryant (Wangamii), H. S. Williams (Auckland), B. O'Neill (Wellington), F. C. Fantham (Westlaml), P. N. Bundle (Otago), and O. F. L. Anderson (South Canterbury). On the motion of the chairman, a vote of appreciation of the services of the late Mr Harris (president of the association), and of sympathy with his family in their bereavement was carried, and the council adjourned as a token of respect to his memory.

Upon resuming Mr T. F. Bowler was elected president. Objection was taken by Mr Anderson to confirmation of the minutes on the ground that the rule passed at the last meeting prohibiting members of lifesaving governing bodies and the New Zealand Life-Saving Executive from being members of the council was wrongly passed. After lengthy discussion the chairman ruled that the motion had been properly passed, and the minutes were confirmed.

The Canterbury Head Centre of the Royal Life-Saving Society, wrote stating (in reply to the council's invitation to meet it and discuss the matter of the Government humane grant), that finality had already been arrived at on the subject, and that no useful object could be served by sending a deputation to the council.

A deputation from the centre, consisting of Messrs S. K. Bassett, G. E. Billson, and S. K. Dixon, waited on the council in reference to the conduct of competitions for the Wigram Shield. —A sub-committee comprising Messrs Knudson, Fantham, and the secretary, with power to act r , was set up, its decisions to be subject to*the concurrence of the president. It was decided that' a letter from the chairman of the South' Canterbury Centre, protesting against the ruling of the chairman at the last meeting of the council, be received and acknowledged. In regard to charges made by the Hawke's Bay Centre against an Auckland swimmer, a sub-committee recommended that the secretary of the Hawke's Bay Centre be requested to write to the Auckland Centre, asking its assistance.

Messrs Anderson, Bryan, And the secretary were constituted a sub-com-mittee to deal with the balance-sheets of centres.

Mr Buchanan gave notice of motion that the Wigram Shield be handed back to the Canterbury Centre of the Royal Life-Saving Society.
