OPIUM AND GAMBLING. Pre.sk A.inocistiott. WELLINGTON, January 8.At the Magistrate's Court to-day Mr A. Cooper, S.M., fined Ah Young the maximum penalty of £IOO for keeping a gaming-house, and Kem Sing, £25 on a similar charge. Ah Young has been several times previously convicted for usinghis premises for gambling of selling lottery tickets. Wong Lou, for being found on Kem Sing's premises, was fined '£l. A WILY CHINEE. DUNEDIN, January 8. T , Sue Pea, alias Sue Chong, was charged at tVe Police Court with having been found in the possession of opium in a form suitable for smoking; The police stated that the accused arrived from Timaru last night with nine tins of opiuin, consigned by' himself to himself. The goods were claimed by him this mbrhing,' and detectives arrested him. It is understood the .opium., wa£ obtained from a. ship lying at.Timaru, upon which part of the crew were Chinamen. Accused wa» remanded "to Timaru.
