SCHOOL PRIZES.

SPREYDON. The breaking-up ceremony took place last Tuesday afternoon. Mr H. H. Ellis, chairman of the. committee, presented the prizes and certificates. Opportunity was taken by the pupils and teachers of presenting Miss Marjorie Macleod, who, after four years' service as pupil teacher, is leaving the school, with a manicure set and a number of books.. The Standard VI. children also presented the headmaster with Christmas gifts in recognition of the excellent results obtained ■at the examination for proficiency certificates. UPPER RICCARTON. 'The: breaking-up ceremony of the Upper Riccarton School was celebrated in, the presence of a large gathering of parents. Mr G. Forsyth, chairman of the School Committee, presided. Musical items and recitations were given by the pupils. Mr Gr. Witty, M.P., addressed the children, and congratulated them on the patriotic spirit displayed in forgoing their prizes and annual picnic in order that the money should be devoted to the poor children of Belgium. The sum of £3O, usually expended in this direction, had been handed over to Mr Cyril Ward, Acting-Consul of Belgium. In concluding his remarks, Mr Witty wished the children a merry Christmas and a happy New Year. The dux medal; presented by Mr Witty, was won by Master Shirley. Mr English, headmaster, presented a medal to Master Tucker for excellence in mathematics, and iir so doing remarked that he would not be surprised to learn that the winner of this special prize would be a professor of mathematics in the future. The girls and boys of Standard VI. presented Mr English with a handsome pipe and matchbox. The chairman fished the children a merry Christmas and a happy New Year, and concluded his remarks by saying he trusted that peace would be declared before the re-opening of the school, when the committee would guarantee the children the best day's enjoyment in their lives. The visitors were entertained at afternoon tea by the girls of Standards V. and VI. Each child in the school was the recipient of a bag of sweets.

PAPANtJI. The Pa pan til Main School broke up for the Christmas holidays on Wednesday last. The chairman (Mr Jones), in addressing the children, alluded in complimentary terms to their generosity in giving their prize money to the Belgium Fund, and stated that, certificates would be .given in lieu of prizes. A letter from Mr Geo. Weston, who again presented a dux medal to the school, was read, apologising for his absence. A hearty vote of thanks to the teaching staff was passed. OXFORD DISTRICT HIGH SOHOOL.

The breaking-up function in connection with the secondary department of the school was held on Wednesday. "In the absence of the chairman of the School Committee, Mr R. B. Daley presided. Au apology for absence was received from the Hon. D. Buddo, who hoped to visit the school at a later date. Mr G. Rennie, chairman of the Board of Education-, apologised for absence, and his place was taken by Mr T. W. Adams. The headmaster read an interesting report on the school, which showed that though the year had been an anxious one, there was every indication that the attendance in future would be good. Nearly the whole of the pupils were continuing a second year, and there was a promise of a good number of new pupils. Interesting addresses were given'by the chairman, Mr Adams, and the Kev. J. E. Holloway. Prizes contributed by the teachers, were presented by Mr T. W. Adams to the following:—
