It was a kindly thought that prompted the Christmas fete on Thursday in aid of the helpless, homeless Belgian children, and the promoters have every reason to be gratified with the result. It is expected that after all expenses have been met there will remain over ,the handsome sum of £BOO for remittance to the Belgian.Minister in London. The plight of the outraged and bereft Belgians has moved the whole of the civilised world to a splendid generosity, quite without equal in history.- When the appeal for help for this helpless people first went forth, the response was electric. From all corners of the earth money and food and clothing poured in, and the stream of charity is still flowing steadily towards Belgium. New Zealand, with her sister oversea dependencies, has given more than'generously both in cash and kind, and no doubt when the further call is made, as it inevitably will be made, the response will show that we are sufficiently grateful for what Belgium has done for the world at large. She has suffered untold and unexampled horrors in interposing her small but brave body between German ruthlessness -and her friends and guarantors, and until that has been made good, until that wrong has been righted, we should be prepared to help assuage Belgium's grievous wounds to the utmost.
