LORD ERNE, FROM NEW YORK; j: An interesting arrival at Lyttelton yestcr-; .day afternoon was the A. and A. Line's chartered steamer Lord Erne, the first' vessel to come direct to Lyttelton from ; New .York; ▼ia the Panama Canal. She is. not the first Vessel to come here by the new route, that distinction being held by the Purley, which, however, visited Auckland and -Wellington first. The Lord Erne left New York on. ls T o3, and reached Panama eight days later. Here a stop was made for two dayßJ io take iri coal, and then the Lord Erne entered the canal. Like.the steamer Calder* grove, at present at Wellington, she encountered trouble in the Culebra Cut, and as 1 ihe result of the landslides was delayed for three days, and even when a channel Was cleared the steamer ran aground for a short time, fortunately sustaining no damage. Heavy Wutlvwest and- north-west gales during the last twelve days of the voyage across the Pacific further retarded the vessel's progress, compelling her to heave to more than once.
; It has- been the custom in the past > for ressels coming from New York to visit Australian ports before proceeding to New Zealand, but wjth the" opening of the canal this lias been reversed, and now Dominion ports are the first touched at.
The Lord Erne is commanded by' Captain TJnwan, who has the following officers :**- Chief, Mr B. McMurty; second, Mr R. Lockkart; third, Mr N. .W. Hamilton ;• - ; chief engineer, Mr James Hudson; second, Mr GL B. Lindrum; third, Mr J. Spiller;, fourth, Mr E. Gresby. •'
The Takapuna, which is to be engaged in the Napier-Gisborne ferry service during the rush of holiday traffic, was re-commissioned on Friday and sailed from Wellington for Napier. Captain H. Dryden is in command,. and has with him the following officers:— Chief, Mr D. McDonald; second, Mr D. Gardiner ; purser, Mr J. D. Smith; chief engineer, Mr A. Sadler; second, Mr F. Naismith; ihird, Mr C. H. West. In addition to others already mentioned, the following officers in the Union Company's service have been granted leave of absence ib join the colours: ; —Mr A. B. Sizer, second officer of the Maori; Messrs F. C. Clark and G. "Herbert/second and third officers of the Wairuna; and Mr C' A. Hatfield, second officer of the Kittawa. " ■ ' •' ' ;
. From Melbourne, via Hobart and Welling•ton, the Huddart-Parker Company's steamer Wimmera will arrive ait Lyttelton to-morrow, morning, and, after . discharging . about 300' lons of cargo and loading general merchandise,
she will return to Melbourne via Dunedin, Bluff, and Hobart. As Mr J. Harvey, second engineer of the Ulimaroa, is ashore' on sick leave, Mr J. Barnes, late of the Werrilee, is relieving him. Mr R. D. McPherson, late fourth engineer of the Ulimaroa, and Mr A. Bradley, late fifth engineer of the same vessel, are now second and fourth engineer respectively of the steamer Oberhansen. Mr B. B. Tobin, of the Corio, has joined the Ulimaroa as fourth engineer, and Mr M. Tulloch, late of the Wandilla, as seventh. Messi-s Bull and McArnish have been promoted to fifth and sixth engineers respectively of the Ulimaroa. Mr P. G. Baigent has joined the Wairuna as second officer. In addition to the Maori and Monowai, which both leave Wellington on Christmas Eve for Lyttelton, the Huddart-Parker steamer Victoria will- also be dispatched to meet the requirements of passengers desiring to leave late in the evening. The Victoria will remain here overnight, sailing for Dunedin on Boxing Day. On completion of discharge of her cargo of Newcastle coal this afternoon, the Wairuna will sail for Westport and there load for Wellington; Afterwards she returns to Newcastle. ...;•■ Bound from Liverpool to New Zealand ports, the Whakatane, running under charter to the F. and S. Line, reached Auckland late yesterday afternoon. After discharging cargo at Auckland and Wellington, the vessel will come on to Lyttelton.
