Y.W.C.A. ANNUAL DISPLAY.
The annual display in connection with the Young Women's Christian Association was held in the Choral Hall on Saturday evening. An entertaining programme, which served to give some idea of the many and varied activities of the association during the year, was staged, opening with '' A Masque of Happy Spirits, "by the Hearth Fire Girls. The following took part:—The Association Spirit (Miss Edie Goode), Madame Early Victoria (Miss- Mabel Vizer), Spirits of Joy, Friendliness, Service, Work, Play, Love (Misses Miller, Cotton, Graham, Goode, Vaughan, Gadd and Bascand) Gossip (Miss Hollow), Laziness (Miss Jakins). Miss Mabel Vizer was very good, as Madame Early Victoria, who could not see, at the outset, why girls*'needed to go out into the world to earn their livings. Finally she was persuaded that, good as early Victorian ways were for their day and generation, they did not apply nowadays. The singing class, which has been under, the charge of Mrs Kaye (president of the association) during the year, gave several part songs, and the Shakespeare class gave a scene from "A Midsummer Night's Dream," the parts Of Hermiaand Helena being taken respectively by Misses Sillivant and Brocklehurst, and those of Lysander and Demetrius by Messrs Lund and Wilson. Miss L. Dearsley "was very successful in her recitation, ''The Uninvited. '' A scene from '' Evevywoman'' was well done, the members of the elocution ciass being responsible for its production. Miss. C. Woodroffe portrayed the part of " Every woman' * splendidly; Miss E.~Vine was- " Nobody "j Miss Clifford, " Beauty' *; Miss Hawkins, '' Youth' ' j and Miss Wheatley, '' Modesty." The parts of "Flattery" and '' Truth' r were well taken by Misses J. Buchanan and E. A. Scott. Various exercises in physical training and "flag drill" demonstrated the results obtained by the classes held in this connection during the year. . Each girl responded promptly, and the little speeches were in every case ehrisp to the point, and fully informative. To those who are not con-* versant with the work of the association, the number of practical institutions connected with it must have eome as quite a revelation. Those who direct the destin-, ies of the Y.W.CVA. must have few idle moments, with such a wealth' of organisation to supervise. The entertainment closed with the National Anthem after this demonstration.
