AKAROA REGATTA.

POSTPONED TILL BOXING DAY, A large number of Christchurch rowing men journeyed to Akaroa by the Cygnet on Tuesday, in order to take part in the regatta to be held there yesterday. The voyage was an exceedingly boisterous one, which severely tested the sailing capacities of the pasConsidering the rough time j they had, they deserved better luck j than they met with. All day yesterj day a howling nor'-wester tore up the ' harbour, which was, a mass of white [ tops. Bowing was out of the question, but all concerned <*hung on," in: the hopes that the wind might drop toj wards evening. However, as the day • grew on, the violence of the gale 'in* i creased, and the committee had to post-. | pone the regatta until Boxiir* Day. The i city men left their boats in the care ; of the Regatta-Committee, and. returned jin the Cygnet in .the evening. A big sea was still running, and again a numi ber of the oarsmen had anything but a f enjoyable time. The only regatta event which was held was "the Handicap Sailing Race, I over a course of about twelve wiles, which resulted as follows: — G. A. Hammond's Waterbeetle (7min), lhr 46min 3sec ... .. 1 N.Z.G.T.S. Amokura's Whaler (25 min), 2hr 13min 30sec .. .. 2 Pull and Glynan's Spare Time .. 3 Yi. J. Vangioni's Dotterel .. .. .. 4 " A. McPhail's Rover and R. Paurini's Rovex also started. In connection with the regatta . an excursion was run from Lyttelton by the Union Company's Reamer Maori, some hundreds "of people making: the trip. The Maori left Lyttelton -at 9 a.m., and arrived at her anchorage a little before noon. The heavy swell running caused the vessel to roll considerably, and many of the passengers were seasick. A long delay whilst they were tendered from the Maori to the wharf by the Kittawa did not add to the enjoyment of the excursionists, many of whom were in anything but holiday mood when they landed. The return journey was commenced about 4 p.m., and was accomplished in about two hours and a half.
