The Sun TUESDAY, DECEMBER 15, 1914. SIR JOSEPH WARD'S GREAT SECRET.
The local Press champion of Liberalism while ever ready to claim a monopoly of brains and political morality for its party, has studiously avoided reference to the wonderful discovery which will enable Sir Joseph Ward to reduce the cost of living, and give every sovereign sterling a purchasing power of, say, 25/-. The Liberal Leader made the glad, proud announcement from an "obscure tea room," as his socialist friends put it, and when the, good "liberal" electors clamoured for something that Mr Massey .could or would not do for them, Sir Joseph reiterated his tea room promise, adding thereto, — the experiment was to begin with the milk industry—meat, bread, etc. The newspaper that preaches so steadfastly the cause of those who have "cornered' ' '' progressive and humanitarian ideals," has not yet risen to the occasion—it has refrained from advertising in its boldest and blackest type this means to our economic salvation. Many people will be constrained to ask why. Maybe this unusual reticence on a matter which should have a particularly close appeal for the mouthpiece of Liberalism is due to a native modesty on the part of this journal, or perhaps it. is just lying low so that the wonder, vhen it is released by the magic wand of Sir Joseph, will be the more staggering for humanity in general. With the great company of workaday citizens of Sydenham, Linwood, Avon, and St. Albans, we are concerned at the present state of the political parties, which ■promises to-prevent Sir Joseph from opening the wonder-casket wherein lies the great secret. Of course, if there, is a sufficient number of electors in New" Zealand ungrateful or reckless enough to sacrifice their economic welfare for purely political reasons, these deserve all that is coming to them in the shape of restricted spending allowances, but we do think—and we believe that. the Liberal Press champion, and good humanitarian, legislators like Messrs Isitt, Eussell, Thaeker, and Glover, will be with \is in this—that Sir Joseph Ward should prove as magnanimous as lie is mighty, and, whether the count goes against him or not, should give our humanity, suffering under the class tyranny of a Conservative rule, the speedy relief his discovery can afford. For ourselves, we do hot much like the thought of Sir Joseph, his baffled humanitarianism finding expression almost in tears, being forced to keep his secret hidden because of political exigencies. Who will help the country out, and speed the "Hey, presto!" and the great -revelation?
