An interesting item of news in connection with the assault on Tsing-tau about a fortnight before the capitulation was given by an officer of the Japanese mail steamer Nikko Maru on the vessel's arrival at Sydney. He stated that a captive balloomwas being Hscd for observation purposes by the Germans, and was the object of shell lire by the Japanese and British. Remarkable to relate, a shell, without damaging the balloon itself, destroyed its moorings. The balloon shot away sea/ward, and a destroyer with the attacking fleet gave chase to pick it up when it .should descend. It was not known whether or not the balloon had been picked up, or what had happened to its occupants when the N v ikko Maru left the East. If dark tobacco "dizzies" you and a light brand nips your tongue, then the obvious smoke is MILD DERBY—the true medium-strength "weed." A tin or a plug will prove it! 2
