CITIZENS' DEFENCE CORPS.
Last evening the Citizens' Defence Corps parade in very large numbers at the King Edward Barracks. Before drill was proceeded with Mr Geo. Harper spoke briefly. He said that now there were 1505 members enrolled. Colonel Robin, Aeting-Com-maudant of the Defence Forces, had invited the executive of the organisation to tneet him, and had told them he was vary pleased with the organisation. He had not given any promise, but there was every reason to believe that the organisation would secure the use of the rifles belonging to some of the cadet corps during the holidays, while facilities were being given for those who wished to go in for class-living with such rifles as were available. In a very short time, badges would be issued for the, whole body generally and for each of the units. Mr Harper hoped that when the commandant (Mr J. J. Dougall) returned from the North Island, a general parade and march through the city streets would be held, but in the meanwhile each company would parade in its own district. The Mayor (Mr H. Holland) said it was the duty of all citizens to assist in the defence of their country. Many women envied the privilege of the men in being able to drill, and he had been approached by a number of women with reference to the formation of a ladies' rifle club.
The companies thou inarched to Hagley Park and Cranmer Square, where company and platoon drill was proceeded with for about an hour.
