Chairman very often exorcise guillotine methods (telegraphs the "Poverty Bay Herald's" special reporter from the coast the other day), but perhaps one of the most amusing conclusions to a political meeting occurred recently at a coastal township. The candidate did not take the platform until after 8 p.m., but from 9 o'clock onward the chairman constantly reminded him that time was flying. At last question-time arrived, but" the chairman, who had been growing manifestly more restless, could contain himself no longer. He consulted his watch, and announced 9.30 p.m., and then said it was unfortunate the licensing laws must be adhered to. He felt as thirsty as anyone iu the hall, and as there was not much time left he would close the meeting. The crowd laughed good-humouredly, and an adjournment was made to an adjacent bar.
