CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
QUARTERLY MEETING-. After The Sun went to press yesterday the Canterbury Chamber of Comferce continued its quarterly meeting. It was decided, on the motion of Mr A. Kaye: "That the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce places on record its gratitude to the men of New Zealand who have responded to the call of King and Empire at this time of trial, and especial!/ thanks the members of the Canterbury force for their prompt response to the appeal.'' The matter of the increased cost of remitting money to London by cable was referred to the council. It was decided to urge the postmaster to extend the time of the closing of southern mails to 11.15 a.m., and the late fee to 11.30 a.m. Messrs N. Jones and A. Poole were elected members.
The Hon. A. F. Wigram moved: — "That this meeting would view with favour the imposition of a war tax, with special exemptions to those who themselves, or whose families have given personal service in any of the contingents." The mover said the cost of the war should not be left to those who were generously disposed, but the laggards should be made to contribute. Mr R. Hill Fisher seconded the motion. Mr F. E. Jones said that some firms he knew had given large sums to the funds, and if they were not exempted they would be paying twice. Mr A. H. Turnbull said the proposal was too crude for the chamber to deal with. He was in sympathy with the views expressed, but there should be equality of*sacrifice. After further discussion Mr Wigram withdrew his motion and the matter was referred'to the council for consideration.
