SOCIETY OF ARTS.

ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Canterbury Society of Arts was held 3resterday afternoon, the president, the Hon, E. C. .7. Stevens, being in the chair.

The annual report and balance-sheet, which was adopted without discussion, stated that though there was a considerable falling-off in the attendance at the last annual exhibition the sales were the second highest in the history of the society. The fourth annual arts, crafts, and sketch exhibition, held last October, also showed a slight increase in sales, as well as in attendances. The report placed"on record the society's regret at the death of the late 11. WynnWilliams, one of the original founders Of the society. The balance-sheet showed a very satisfactory position, when it is considered that the strike, the war, and other events have oc-

cm-red, reducing the society's opportunities of obtaining" revenue from the letting of the Exhibition Hall, and interfering with sales, the net profit of £BS on the year's working must be considered to be good. The amount paid into ! the general charges account Avas £2(55 16/11. voted to the art union account £l4B, interest on debentures £7O 1/10. In return for these outgoings the society received £.'!99 10/G in subscriptions, a total profit of £9 0/10 from its two exhibitions, £6B 8/6 from gallery rents, and £SO from the City Council. An additional sum of £42, representing outstanding subscriptions, is to be reckoned amongst the assets. The society's liabilities, most of which are made up by the loan debentures on its building, amount to £1642 5/8, but against this are to be reckoned assets amounting to £8640 8/2, including the building account, £331)7 3/9, and the value of the permanent collection, £5090 17/ S.

The office-bearers and council were re-elected as before, with the exception that Dr Lester was to a seat on the council rendered vacant by the resignation of Dr E. Jennings, and his Honour Mr Justice Denniston Avas elected to another vacant seat. The meeting concluded with votes of thanks to the president, to Mr J. W. K. Lawrence for having audited the accounts in the absence of the hon. axiditor, Mr N. L. Macbeth," and the hon. treasurer, Mr W. J. Moore. •'
