NEW BRIGHTON NOTES.
The Rose and Sweet Poa Show, which was to have been held on December 1, has had to be postponed indefinitely, owing to the recent frosts and very dry season. It is hoped that postponing the show will not damp the enthusiasm of those who intended to exhibit, as there is every likelihood of the exhibition being a success, although held a little later. Wednesday evening saw the weekly parade of the Home Defence Corps. There was a very fine turnout of them, about 50 or 60 strong, and the marching for so new a corps was very good. A very large audience is anticipated for the concert to be held in the Presbyterian Hall to-night, Saturday. The members of the New Brighton Girls' Reading Club who are giving the concert, have for some time past been working very diligently on the various items. The programme is very varied, consisting of comediettas, tableaux, songs, and glees. The greater portion of the proceeds are to go to help the Rev. A. Scriven in his work at New Guinea. This fact alone should be sufficient to draw a large audience, for Mr Scriven made many friends during his three years' ministry at New Brighton. Mr Otira Opie, son of Mr C. H. A. T. Opie, has just returned from the military training college in Australia, and is leaving New Zealand very shortly on his way to the war. He will carry with him the best wishes of all New Brighton people that he may have a successful time and return once again to the land of his birth.
