A most enjoyable social took place in the Grecnpark School on Thursday evening last, when the residents of -the district tendered a social to the local postmaster, Mr Hugh Carr, sen., and his wife, on the occasion of their golden wedding. The crowded house testified to the great esteem in which' both are held. Miss Lewington played ..the pianoforte .. overture, sang a duet with Mr ..Trewern, and accompanied musical items rendered by Messrs Trewern, Whitelaw, Hansen, Scoltank,' C. Smith, and Henry Lewington. The chairman, Mr. P. Hubbard, eulogised the many good ..qualities of the guests, and, on behalf of the residents, presented each of the guests with a beautiful gold watch, suitably inscribed. Messrs J. B. Fleete, G. Whitelaw, and J. Silvester endorsed the chairman's remarks. Mr Carr feelingly returned thanks on behalf of his wife and himself. After supper a dance was held, Mr C. Lewis being M.C., and Mr W. Harvey (accordeon) supplying the music. Mr Carr, who hails from Kent; was a nian-o'-warsman on service in the North Sea during the Crimean War. Arriving in Wellington in 1857, he assisted in the erection of the first lighthouse at Wellington Heads, the material for whifth was sent out in sections, and was built under the supervision of the late Mr E. G. Wright. For many years Mr Carr was farming on the Mount Grey Downs. Mrs Carr's kindly care for the sick of the district has endeared her to all in the neighbourhood far and near.
