DROWNED IN SURF.
WOOL-LOADING FATALITY.
Press Association. NAPIER, November 28. Whilst the steamer Kahu was engaged in lightering wool at Te Awaite this moruing, a surf-boat capsized, and three men were drowned. There are no details. LATER DETAILS. BOAT SWAMPED IN HEAVY SURF. Press Association. WELLINGTON, November 28. News of the boating fatality at Te Awaite, East Coast, near Cape Palliser, was received here by telephone this morning. A surf boat belonging to the steamer Kalru was returning to the vessel with a load of wool from Wiffenf ord's Station, when the engine broke down. The anchor was dropped, but the boat swamped in a heavy sea, and three out of four men in her were drowned, viz., W. Leers, first mate, aged 30, who was married in Wellington three months ago, and O 'Brien and Patterson, able seamen. The fourth man was rescued by the Kahu's lifeboat, in charge of Wilson, second mate. The bodies have not been recovered. The Ripple has been ordered from Akitio to proceed to the scene of'the disaster.
