' Judging from the "published reports of his speeches, the semi -official; Bib'e'ral candidate for 'Christchurcli-East, is much more at home in his professibhal sphere than in as a ''jjolitir-al doctor." It.is;.a .fine thing to see a popular citizen like-the doctor anxious to serve his country in Parliament, but we doubt very much his qualifications for the job. Dr Thacker's gift of abrupt repartee against challenging critics is amusing and at times effective in an election meeting, .but does it connote a qualification for Parliamentary 'responsibilities? It scarcely seems so.' Dr Thacker may show better when he has really found his leader. Last evening lie made copious references to Sir Joseph Ward'-as "my chief "and "our great leader," but thus far the only people who have taken a party interest in the genial medico is the local Liberal-Labour Association. Dr Thacker at present has no chief. That would not matter such.a great deal if he did not also lack a working knowledge of the leading questions of the day. So far as we are aware he has not yet improved on his recently quoted "explanation" of the Xelson systeni, a Bible-in-sehools'mat-ter, and last evening a questioner ; who asked . the .candidate to explain proportional representation had to be satisfied with being referred to another candidate for a definition. "Something would have to be done with regard to the cost of living," concedes Dr~Thaeker. =Something will have to be done, truly, but what does the candidate propose to do? He appealed for support of Mr Russell oh the ground that voters by so doing would be rendering valuable assistance to the cause of Liberalism. This is merely foolish
logic. Liberalism may need Assistance, but what about the interests of the poor old country'? Surely these have the first and best claim on the electorates.
