A LIEUTENANT'S HEROISM. HOW HE WON THE V.C. PARIS, November 22. Lieutenant Dimmer, who has been awarded the Victoria Cross for working a Maxim till it was destroyed, in spite of his having five wounds,* vas in command of four Maxims, with which lie was ordered to check the Prussian Guards, whose attack was supported by a hail of shells which dismantled three of the Maxims. Lieutenant Dimmer nearly fainted from the effect of shrapnel wounds, but a comrade gave him some brandy. The Germans were advancing in close order, and they were mown down in whole rows by the Maxims. When all the lieutenant's comrades were killed, he swallowed the rest of the brandy and emptied thrc.3 belts of three hundred cartridges each before he fell unconscious. The Germans wei*e decimated and fled, and English soldiers picked up the lieutenant after the battle.
