GERMANS RETREATING. VICTORIA CROSS HEROES. LONDON, November 26. Reuter's Boulogne correspondent reports that the Germans who were forcing the Allies on the extreme left are beginning to retreat towards Brugos. German batteries between Nieuport and Dixmude have been silenced, and there is no reply to the Allies' artillery on the Yser. 'LONDON, November 26. The Victoria Cross has been awarded t to the following:— Private Gddley, who fought a ma-chine-gun at Mons under a hot fire for two hours, after haying been wounded. Driver Drain and Driver Luke, who volunteered to save the guns at Le 'Cateau, and did so, when the Germans ' were only a hundred yards away. Major Yate, of the Yorkshire Light Infantry, who fought in the trenches atLe Cateau until the ammunition was exhausted, and then led a charge of nine- :. teen survivors, in which he was mortally wounded. Lance-Corporal Holds, who assisted to save the guns at Le Cateau. • Captain Bradbury, deceased, who organised the defence of L Battery at Nery. Captain W. Johnson, who at Missy throughout September 14 worked two rafts with 'his own hands, bringing back .wounded and returning with ammunition, enabling an advanced brigade to maintain its position across the river.
Bombardier Harlock, who, wounded at Vendressc on September lb, persisted in returning to lay his gun. Havildar Gagra Singh is the first Indian to be recommended for the Victoria Cross. He commanded fifteen "Indians defending a trench, who killed sixty Germans before they were overpowered. The Havildar was the only survivor. He snatched a.German ofii'cer's sword and killed ten men before he fell. He was left for dead with five wounds.
