WHAT PROHIBITION PROHIBITS.
.Sir—Of, late .the prohibitionists have been trying; to make capital over the alleged statements of British military leaders in regard to liquor., , But . to come nearer home, how can they explain the position that Otago, with her numerous no-license districts, has placed herself in to-day? What do we find? Instead of the young men of Otago being anxious to fight for their country, they are more than satisfied,to allow itheir contingents to be supplemented with men from the provinces which are still under license. What is the inference? It cannot be that it is the lack of beer, because statistics plainly show that as much liquor is.consumed ,in Otago as any other province. Sir, the position must be faced. Nolicense, with its unaccountable and mysterious subtle influence, has robbed the young men of their manliness and selfrespect. Bung & Co. have said prohibition docs not prohibit. Sir, it does. It prohibits men from desiring to" protect helpless women and children from outrage and murderV This deafly proves ■ that communities who are weak enough to, vote for no-lieensp,, are deficient, |n ; that clement which breed sons string' enough to preserve their liberty anil defend thenEmpire.—Yours, etc., ' Nov. -26/ li.> •'■•• " ■'"■'.<*:*■*< :>;< Q.E.JX *•
