CITIZENS' DEFENCE CORPS.
TOTAL TO DATE. * The number now" on the roll »f -the Citizens' Defencc*Corps is 1353. Islington has formed a unit to be worked with the Biccarton unit. A -public meeting will be held in Kaiapoi next week for the purpose of -enrolling members from Kaiapoi and the surrounding district. A well-attended meeting was held in St. Stephen's Schoolroom, Ashburton, on Wednesday evening, for the purpose of considering the question of the formation of a local corps. Mr C. J. Harper (president of the local Honorary Territorial Association) presided, and explained the purpose of the meeting. Officers were elected as follow:—Presi-, dent, Mr C. J. Harper; hon. secretary and treasurer, Mr CM. Denham; executive committee,. Captain A. A. Fooks, Lieut. T. Hayes, and Messrs C. W. Nicoll, A. Clark, J. Williams, and H. C. Percy. One hundred and six members were enrolled. FENDALTON UNIT.
The Fendalton unit held a meeting, after parade on Wednesday evening, Captain Helmore presiding. The following officers were elected: —Mr G:.H. N. Helmore, captain; Mr G. E. Curry, platoon sergeant; officers in charge of sections, Messrs C. Bell, W. A. Fleming, R. Gaughley, Warren Fisher, and A. L. T. Jones. Mr O. T., J. Alpers was elected honorary secretary of the unit. There were 78 on parade, out of a total roll number of 86. It was decided to hold a public meeting at Fendalton next week for enrolment of members, in order to bring the Fendalton unit up to the strength of two platoons—r 124 men. ...
