CULVERDEN-WAIAU RAILWAY.
The secretary of the Culverden-Waiau "Railway League recently wrote, through Mr G, 'W. Forbes, member for the district, to the Hon. Mr Eraser, Minister' for Public Works, regarding the delayin the construction work. The f oUowung reply has now been received:— ' Referring to the letter -.which you. forwarded me from Mr S. Baker, hon. sec. to the Waiau Railway League, in which enquiry was made relative to the second and third contracts for the Culverden-Waiau Railway Extension, 1 have to state that in regard to No. 2 Contract, the' fencing has been erected from 3 miles 48: chains, and excavation for bridge at 3 miles 55 chains commenced. No. 3 contract" has been twice advertised, but no satisfactory tender hasi been received. The Resident Engineer is in touch with two or three, people with a viewto having this work carried out on piece work basis. Regarding the suggestion that this work should be /utilised for unemployed, I have to point out that to alarge extent the construction .is ,6f, a ' -nature■■'which can be most economically carried out by plough and scoop, and" team work generally. Such-work is not suitable for unemployed,, andin any case does not a:fford employment for a very great number of men.
