BRILLIANT CYCLE RACING. ~C. A. Piercey, who was a member of the Australian road-racing team \Vhicli went to France, and who subsequently journeyed across to America on the outbreak of the war, sends a Sydney paper some interesting particulars of the recent successes of Australian riders at the Newark track (U.S. A.).
A. Croullett, who, it will be remembered, was in a team with P. Hehir in the six-days' races held at Melbourne and Sydney three years ago, when the Victorians won both events, defeated C. Moretti, the Italian crack rider, in two straight heats. Encouraged by his success, Goullett was induced, to filial - lengeFrank KrameiY the. American sprint, champion. 1 Ttie American was riding well up to form. There wad keen interest in the match between ' Goullett and Kramer, and 15,000 witnessed ;i.t. The event was decided in three heats. Kramer won the first rather easily. The second test, however, was won by the Australian, who put up a clever exhibition of generalship. In the final, the American Avas again out-generalled. When the result was announced, the crowd was astonished, and could hardly realise that the champion was defeated- ! ! ' A. P. Grenda (Tasmania) beat Oscar Egg (Switzerland) —one of the greatest uiipaced track riders in the world —in an uidimited pursuit race, catching and passing Egg in less than three miles. The Tasmanian also won a half-mile open event. Ivor Lawson (America), once world's champion, was second, and E. Spears (Australia) third. R. Spears "made good" after his defeat in the Derby by winning the
championship " revenge event, among the utarters being A. J. Clark (Australia), F. Kramer (America), Moretti (Italy), ami \V. Rutt (Germany). Pierce}' was successful in a. two-mile handicap from 190 yards in Jim in liOsec. Grenda and Gordon Walker, both of Australia, won the one-mile tandem championship, A. J. Clark and W. Rutt being runncra-up.-
