Tlie Social-Democratic candidate for the Christchurcli East constituency (Mr 11, Hunter), who has been consistently candid regarding his feelings towards the Massey Party, declared at his opening address on Monday evening last that tho workers were absolutely disgusted with the Reform Government, and the way in which it had dealt out the "square deal." In other w9rds, tho Government had either been unable or had not seen lit (for reasons of its own) to satisfy to the full the demands of the party which Mr Hunter represents. No sound Government that had any regard for its country as a country could go so far. One of these days, perhaps, Mr Hunter will go further in his. candour and admit frankly that, in his eyes, and the eyes of his party, the head and forefront of the Government's offence is that it broke a critical strike by unusual but legitimate and effective means. Mr Hunter can be applauded for one statement in particular: "That a bond, whether between nations or individuals, should be strictly adhered to." This is an opinion that tho opportunists of tho party will not readily agree to. Apparent!/ the "to hell with agreements" policy has been discarded. Generally, Mr Hunter's address was one to commend itself to the class he represents.. He is fond of that delusion, proportional representation, and he naturally enough demands the initiative and referendum, and the recall. Even the Liberal Party, should it regain power, will hesitate before it
goes that far. In conclusion, the SocialDemocratic candidate guaranteed that if elected he would do his best to carry out his programme. There is no reason to think otherwise. Mr Hunter certainly, possesses the courage of his convictions, and in these days when wavering politicians are not uncommon, he comes as a welcome contrast.
