Mr 0. S. Thomas, half-mile amateur champion of New Zealand, has returned jo. Christchurch from a visit to England. A Sydney cable message announces shatMr H. «f. Taperell has oeen appointed news editor of the "Telegraph." Mr R. A. Heme, local manager of the Dresden Piano Company, returned from a holiday trip to Australia yesterday. „
The Hutt County Coun'cil has been presented with a framed enlarged phonograph of Mr F. Rogers, the first European born in the "Wellington district. Messrs H. A. I. Jones (Timaru), C. J. Heakes (Wellington), E. J. Gravestock ((London), Wallace Hunter (Cambridge), and P. McNeil (Dunedin) are staying at Warner's Hotel. Messrs John I. Royds, T. C. Field, and E. C. Brownell, of the Young Men 's Christian left for Wellington last evening to - take .partr in the meeting of the National- Committee of the* Young Men's Christian Association of NeAv Zealand.
Mr J. C. Barnett, a well-known ofireer in the service of the Union Steam Ship Company, and late chief officef of the Waihora, who went to England, on extended leave some month ago, has ~enrolled in London to join the New Zealand Expeditionary Force on its arrival. Mr Norman Clark, who was second refrigerating engineer of the White Star liner lonic on her last voyage to New Zealand, has also enrolled. He is the younger son of the late Captain J. W. Clal-lt, for many years harbourmaster at JLyttelton. -
