THE WATER SUPPLY.
WORK ALMOST COMPLETED. In a few days' time the work of connecting up the three new wells with the sump at the water supply pumping station should be completed. The trenches for the purpose are already in readiness, and the wall of the sump has been pierced to admit of the entry of the connecting pipe. The maximum amount of water which has been pumped from the existing wells —two eight-inch and two six- | inch—is two million gallons per day. Running at that capacity, however, the pumps raised the water too fast, and the result was that sand was mixed with the water. Three eight-inch iron pipes are to connect the new wells with the sump. It is anticipated that the increase in the output of water consequent on the supply of the new wells will be from 50 to 75 per cent. This capacity will easily deal with the anticipated requirements during the coming summer—2,soo,ooo gallons per day. The total capacity of the gas driven | plant is 5,124,000 gallons per day. | The pumping station, when the new j connections have been completed, will therefore be able to deal for a longtime with the city's requirements. The two complete plants allow of a continuity of pumping, and constitute an assurance against break-down or interruption. During the five years that the plant has been working there has not been a single interruption in pumping, a fact that bears eloquent testimony to those responsible for its working.
