The Chatham Islands Fishing Company's Himitangi set out. at 10.30 last night for the Chatham Islands, but had t<f return through trouble with her engines. The delay rras riot of long duration, however, and the vessel continued her. voyage at midnight. En route from New York to Nov/ Zealand, the steamer Star, of New Zealand, running under the auspices of the A. and A. Line, arrived at. Fremantle on Thursday. Her next port Of call will be Adelaide, and then she comes across to Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin. - According to a West Coast exchange, there is now an excellent channel at Karamea River with 12ft to 14ft. of water on the bar at high tide. The stream for months past has been running along tho beach. On Sunday last a section of the population turned out and cut a straight channel from the training wall to the sea. One hundred men, with 44 horses and. 40 -..scoops, got to work, and ex-' cavated sufficient sand to enable the ' river to cut through. The community is gleeful at the result of the experiment, and there is great hope that the river will now maintain a straight course. An unexpected arrival at Lyttelton this morning was the' steamer Lauderdale, from Newcastfe. The vessel left Newcastle on Monday last for Oamaru, and it was intended thnt she should put out a part cargo of coal at that port before coming up to : Lyttelton to discharge the balance. She anchored in the stream at 3.15 a.m., and after receiving instructions went on to Oamaru. Due here to-morrow morning from Melbourne, via Hobart and Wellington, the Ilud-fiart-Pnrker steamer Wimmera is bringing 400 tons of cargo for discharge here. She ■ails on Monday for Melbourne, via southern ports and HoT:arii. i'or vbildren'a Hacking Cough at night, Woods' Great Peppermint Cure. a/6,2/e.
