Mr J. M. Niven (Dunedin) is a guest at the United Service Hotel. ' ■ Mr G. Witty, M.P., arrived from Wellington this morning. From Auckland is announced the death of Mr Samuel Cochrane Macky, a well known resident of that city. Messrs L. Victor (Sydney), and R. M. Thom (Wellington) are staying at the Clarendon Hotel. Visitors to Christchurch staying at Warner's Hotel include Messrs F. Montague (Wellington) and T. K. Thompson (Wellington). Mr J. Cullen, Commissioner of Police, is at present in Christchurch. He will carry out an inspection of the Christchurch Police Station this afternoon. Mr P. Snowden, member of the House of Commons for Blackburn, and Mrs Snowden arrived from Wellington this morning, and went on to Dunedin. They will return to Christchurch on the 20th. A Press Association cable message from London announces that Sir Alexander Godley has been gazetted MajorGeneral. Sir Alexander Godley previously ranked in the British Army as with the local rank of MajorGeneral. Dr Chilton has received word that his son, Mr Frank Chiltdn, has obtained a commission in the Second Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. At the time of writing Mr Chilton was in camp at Plumstead Marshes, Woolwich. He has been studying medicine at Edinburgh,; and has been in the Officers' Training Corps during the time he was in the Scottish capital. Mr Charles Bird, of the firm of Bird Bros., Nelson, whose death occurred on Saturday, was born in that town over seventy years ago. On his retirement, he was captain of the Nelson Volunteer Fire Brigade, and was one of the original members of the Nelson Rowing Club. He acted for many years as starter for the Nelson Jockey Club, and was a member of the Licensing Committee, and other bodies.
