Mr D. W. Rosie, purser of tlxe Wahine, baa been granted holiday leave, and Mr C. Leigliton, late purser of the Waitemata, is relieving liim. Mr K. 11. Parke, purser of the Warrimoo, has joined the Dunedin office of the Union Company, and Mr Neil, of the Paloona, has succeeded him. Running under charter to the New Zealand Shipping Company, the steamer Knight of the Carter arrived at Auckland yesterday morning from Montreal via Cape Town and Australian ports. The vessel has about 1200 tons of .cargo to put out at Auckland before coming on to Wellington and Lyttelton. She Is due here about the middle of next week. The Shaw, Savill steamer Mamari, which left London on October 16, is due at Wellington on December 1. She is coming out in place of the Arawa, and will leave Wellington on the homeward journey on December 81. The liew steamer Mako (600 tons gross), ■which has sailed from Glasgow, was built specially for Richardson and Co. at a cost of £20,000, and will be used in the East Coast trade. She has accommodation for 20 passengers, and ; will be able to carry about 650 tons of cargo. It is probable that Bhe ■will iuri in conjunction with the Kahu, the two vessels maintaining a weekly service between Auckland, East Coast bays, Gisborne Bnd Nnpier. _ Several charters by the Union Company have been announced of late, and it now transpires, that the steamer Prophet, which arrived at" Auckland yesterday from Newcastle, lias come across to New Zealand with
coal under the auspices of the Union Company. These charters are. no doubt duo to the increased demand for coal during the past few months. The Prophet is a vessel of 3226 tons gross and is only two years old, having been built in 1912 at Newcastle-on-Tyno for Messrs J. Gaff and Co., of Sydney. Another steamer under charter to the Union Company, the Canada Cape, left Newcastle on Thursday with a load of coal for Wellington. The Hinemoa, which was to have arrived at Lyttelton to day, will not leave Wellington till to-morrow, and will arrive at the port on Monday. Bad .weather is the cause of the delay. According to latest advices the C. and D. Line's steamer Indrabarah is expected to arrive at Auckland from London, via way ports, on November 25. She will complete discharge at Napier and Wellington. The wharves at Lyttelton to-day presented a more animated appearance than has been the case for some time past. In addition to several coastal vessels, no fewer than three ocean-going stoamers, the Zealandic, Rakaia, and Rotcrua, were discharging cargo. There has been rather a dearth of oversea Shipping of late, but this week end's quota in a way compensates for the past slackness.
