SETTING THE MEN FREE.
The idea is gaining ground in Great Britain that leisured women, both married and unmarried, should set male breadwinners free to enlist by undertaking to do their work during their absence. The wives* of professional men and others have volunteered for such service as tram conductors, shop assistants, and so on. It has been pointed out that women could act as letter carriers, clerks, and in a hundred other capacities. It is also suggested that schoolmasters and civil servants who wish to volunteer should be temporarily replaced by women.
