At the Darfield Court yesterday a man was charged with committing a criminal offence against a woman, 30 years of' age. After hearing .lengthy evidence the Magistrate dismissed the case. Notice- is given in this issue that the office of the registrar of electors and returning officer for Christchurch North has been removed from Manchester Street to the Government Buildings in Worcester Street. A petition in bankruptcy has been filed by Charles Hill, solicitor, Christchurch* The first meeting of creditors will be at the Hereford Chambers, 14+ Hereford street, on Tuesday, November 3, at 11 a.m. Work has been found by the Labour Department for 39 men during the past few days. Twelve men have been sent to Ashley Gorge, four to Sunnyside Asylum, six- to Wannate, and seventeen to the City Council. The superintendent of the fire brigade acknowledges the receipt of the sum of two guineas from Mr D. Webley, in consideration of the brigade's services at the fire which occurred on his premises, 8G Leinster Road, St. Albans, on October IG. The voluntary contributions of the Civil Service to the Empire Defence Fund for the mouth of August amounted to £5389 16/9, made up as follows: — Staff of general departments £2730 18/3, Post and Telegraph Department £2OOO, Police £658 18/0. The chairman of the Petitions Committee (Mr H. J. H. Okey) reported to the House of Representatives yesterday on the petition of John Scott Myers, of Christchurch, who wished to nave a retrial of the afiiliation been so often before the Christchurch Courts of late months. The committee recommended the petition to the consideration of the Government. Ebenczer Broadfoot, an elderly man, a steerage passenger on board the ferry steamer Mbiiowai, was,'found, dead in his cabin this morning. He was'acconipanied,on board the vessel at Welling: ton last evening .by his .wife, having I left Wairoa the previous morning by motor car, and appeared in a frail condition. He had been previously under treatment, for an internal complaint. An inquest'will'be held. The deceased, who was born in-.London and i educated at St. Albans, Hertfordshire, entered the Imperial • Service during the Crimean war, • being attached to the Army Medical Department. Later he formed one of Lord Elgin's expedition to China, accompanying part of tho Perthshire Light Infantry, but was wrecked in the Straits of Sunda. Eventu--1 ally reaching Singapore, the force was diverted to the Bengal Presidency consequent on the Indian Mutiny. After being subsequently' employed in China in ordj nance details for the bombardment "of Canton, and in other gunboat duties on I tne Canton JRivqr, he was attached to the r i Royal Engineers, and was present at tne/ destruction of the forts at Taku, in'-thq Gulf of Pi-tchili and the Pei-ho River. Returning to England, he performed the duties of compounder of medicines with the Royal Artillery Staff. He then volunteered and proceeded to North America, and on his return he volunteered for service in New Zealand, and -served with Lieutenant-general Cameron's force in the'Waikato war. He followed mining and journalism in Auckland till 1870, when he was appointed Field Quartermaster for the operations against Te Kooti. He joined the Public Works Department l in 1873, and was retrenched in 1885. Subsequently he joined the Friendly Societies ' Registry Office, and in 1892 became deputy-registrar. Mr " Benzoni, who was recently appointed assistant railway engineer for Southland, is a son of the'de '■ ceased.
