ADELAIDE, October 29. Wheat —4/11 to 5/-. Bran and pollard—l/ 7. MELBOURNE, October 29. Hides. —There was a moderate supply with active competition at the sales to-day. Catalogues were cleared in sellers' favour. (Received October 30, 11.25 a.m.) Flour, bran, and pollard are quoted at fixed prices. Oats, 3/6 to 3/7; barley, English 5/9, Cape A/- to 4/3; maize, 3/11; potatoes, £8 to £9; onions, £ll 10s. THE MARKETS. The amount of trade in grain circles has been infinitesimal for weeks past, and is not likely to brighten to any extent this side of harvest. Wheat is the only product in demand, but.very little is offering, it becoming more and more apparent that the growers hold little or no grain. As the Government price for wheat is 5/3 f.0.b., merchants offer 5/- at handy stations.
Oats are not in request, though a fair amount of fodder will be required to keep the Expeditionary Force supplied, and offers for this purpose have been- invited lately. As. the limited shipping facilities are likely to be very heavily taxed by other produce, oats will probably be squeezed out unless the War Office is in urgent need of them, which seems unlikely. Prices are unchanged. A few lines of better-class malting barley have changed hands lately at 3/6. per bushel and thereabouts. There has been no demand for this cereal for monthspast, until the present. Potatoes are not in request, and farmers have generally ceased marketing them, as the price offered hardly pays, for the; labour expended in bagging and A few shipments were made to Australia recently, :but this outlet is now closed:? Nominally the price offered to growers is £1 per ton. IN AUCKLAND. 1 (Sun Special.) AUCKLAND, October* 30. ' ■ Tire* tone of the potato market has changed since last report. The Waitemata only brought 1600 sacks, and a similar quantity arrived by the Victoria. These coming to a bare market have tended to firm prices. The price locally has advanced to £4 10/-, ex store, which is readily obtainable for any good lots offering. The local growing crop is very backward this season, and the tubers are immature. A few Victorian onions are coming to hand in good order, and supplies are still available from San Francisco and Japan. Values are from 16/'- to 20/- per cwt, according to quality. Milling wheat is very firmly held. Sales are made at 5/3, f.o.b. Fowl "wheat is still in strong demand, but good, whole wheat is very scarce, whieh points to what formerly was classed as grain for fowl feed having been used for other purposes. The result is that inostbj&.inferior..grain is now offering as fowl wheat. The quotation is 5/9, ex store. - The oat market is still quiet, business being of a hand-to-mouth character. There are still large quantities of oats awaiting shipment. Prices are unchanged. The local market for chaff is not quite so strong as it was, although the price rules at £6, ex wharf, and £6 5/-, ex store.
