EARTHQUAKES.

Press Association. NAPlEß,,October 28. Two heavy and sustained shocks of earthquake occurred at 11.46 o'clock this morning. HASTINGS, October 28. A prolonged shock of earthquake was experienced here at 11.45 this morning. GISBORNE, October 28. A prolonged earthquake was. felt at 11.5.0 this morning. No damage is reported. The town/clock stopped. WELLINGTON, October 28. The postmaster, at Tokomaru Bay wires the Secretary of the Post Office: — "I regret to report another depressing shock of earthquake. Many chimneys have again been levelled to the ground and stores have suffered considerably. The people are becoming alarmed. The direction of the shake was east to west. The university examinations for Honours, Senior, and Tinline scholarships, degrees in arts, law, science, engineering, music and medicine, and home science, certificates of proficiency, and accountancy, commence on Tuesday, November 3, and conclude on Thursday, November 19. The hours are: Morning, 9.30 to 12.30; afternoon, 2.30 to 5.30. At last night's meeting of the Lyttelton Borough Council the Mayor (Mr J. R. Webb) referred to the death of the late Mr Frank Benjamin. Through his demise, he said, Lyttelton had lost one of. its most prominent and useful citizens, a man who had always worked for the.betterment of the town. Especially had he taken an interest in the Boy Scouts and school children, whom the hand of death had deprived of a true friend and brother. Under - his tuition the Lyttelton Scouts had been very successful, for he had always laid himself out to do his best for them. He moved that a letter of condolence be sent to the relatives of the deceased gentleman. The motion was seconded by Cr. J. T. Norton and carried, all the councillors speaking in feeling terms of the good work performed by Mr Benjamin among the young people.
