COUNTRY NEWS.

(From Our Special Correspondents.) HORRELVILLE. The funeral of the late Mt Stephen Sheat was conducted on Friday last at the Oust Cemetery. A large number of residents from Horrelville and surrounding districts'were present to show respect to one so long and favourably known among them. The simple Methodist service was conducted by the Rev. J. F. Martin, and the Rev. Mr Hay read a Psalm at the graveside. OHOKA. The Ohoka Methodist Sunday School anniversary services were successfully conducted last Sunday by the Rev. A. N. Scotter. The annual picnic was held on Friday, when, in spite of the welcome rain, the children had a happy time. The Hall Committee kindly lent the supper room of the hall. The usual races were ran. SWANNANOA. The School Committee held a concert on Friday night to secure funds for the annual prizes. The function was a great success. Mr Kelly, the chairman, presided, and the school children rendered a fine programme of action songs and dances, which were interspersed with items from local and visiting friends. Master John Winter recited "The Absent-Minded Beggar," and a collection was taken, which resulted in an extra £1 3/-, which will be sent to one •of the war funds. Miss Craig, the mistress, and Miss Hayden, assistant, were congratulated upon the successful <effort. KIRWEE ATHLETIC CLUB. A meting of the above club was held •on Saturday evening, when there was a .good attendance of members present. !Mr S. Robertson was voted to the chair. Mr W. Crawshaw wrote accepting the of delegate on the North Canterbury Centre,. New Zealand Cycling 4ind Athletic Union. The secretary reported that thei following entries had been receivedi— Maiden, 100 yds, 7; 100 yds, open, 10; :220yds, 11; 440 yds, 11; 120 yds hurdles, 880 yds, 10; 1 mile, 10. The cycle races had also received fair entries. The secretary was instructed to write "to the Courtenay Agricultural and Pastoral Association for the use of their produce shed for a refreshment booth. Messrs McKay, Stockden, and Lorgelly were appointed a sub-com«iitt.ee to make arrangements re refreshments. .Mr Hartle, who had acted as hon. secretary to the club during the past three rears, wms elected a life member. Mr W. Conway is to receive entries :'or ladies' nail driving competition, for which a valuable silver teapot will be presented as first prize. Sub-committees were appointed to prepare and measure the ground.
