ACCOUNTANTS' SOCIETY.
Press Association. DUNEDIN, October 15. The fifth annual meeting of the New Zealand Society of Accountants was held to-night. , About forty members ■were present, and Mr J. Brown (viceoccupied .the chair. The annual report stated that the present membership was 1907. The income and expenditure account shows a surplus of £402 15/10 for the year, and the accumulate- 1 fund stands at £3356 16/7. In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, the chairman criticised the decision to insist on candidates passing the Senior Civil Service or matriculation examination before sitting for the professional examination, and said he did not think the society would have anything to fear if such a test were abandoned. He thought the system of apportioning grants to university colleges on an attendance basis would have to be readjusted. The council might have to face an increased grant to colleges where the present subsidy was inadequate. The following were elected to the council: —Canterbury district: Mr W. T. Bottrell; MarlborougbNNelson, and Westland f.".strict: Mr E. J. Harvey.
