Hothouse grown tomatoes were on sale in the fruit markets last week, and sold from 2/6 to 3/- per lb in wholesale quantities. Entries for the Timaru-Christchurch cycle road race, which is to be held on Saturday, October 24, will close this evening. So far most of the betterknown riders have entered. A daily motor car service has been commenced between Kaikoura and Parnassus. As the car does the trip in two and a-half hours, Kaikoura,has now been brought within eight hours' joiirney of' Christchurch by rail and road. Paterson concluding with an admirable summing up of the case for and against Socialism. A very enjoyable athletic entertainment was given by members of the Christchurch Athletes' Club, in Mr F, A. Hornibrook's* physical culture institute on Saturday evening, i n aid of the Huntly relief fund. The programme consisted principally of exhibitions of boxing and were no contests—provided by a number . of amateurs, including some young boys, and by two professionals, P. Cook and J. Thompson. Some of the exhibition spars were of a comic nature, and.very laughable they were. A blindfold boxing £*»ut was,particularly amusing.
