BOWLING.

OPENING THE SEASON. , To-morrow, weather permitting, the opening ceremonies will be continued. Christchurch, United, Opawa, Linwood, Edge ware, ;and St. Albans will open in the city, and several of the country clubs will also have their first roll up.: , Canterbury is reserving its formal opening for the a 17th inst., when the function will be combined with Ladies' Day. However, the greens will be available for play on Sa.turday and from that time onwards. THE PATEIOTIC APPEAL. The Centre is making an appeal to bowlers to assist the Patriotic Fund by a special bowlers' contribution. <,An; effort will be made to collect this on Saturday, and every bowler is invited to take with him to the green any sum from 1/- up to 10/-, and drop it into the hat. No doubt many bowlers have already contributed, but the extra amount they will be asked to give will not break them. It is said that he who gives quickly gives twice, and bowlers who give twice may logically claim also to have given quickly. Those who have not given already should do their best to aim at the Centre's.limit, viz., 10/-. As there are 1000 Bowlers in North Canterbury, the objective of £IOO is a very reasonable one. TWO FEET ON THE MAT. The new rule is the subject of much discussion, but generally bowlers seem to be prepared to accommodate themselves to the change. It is quite certain that the rule will not be observed if the short mats in use now are not discarded. The presence of the long mat —4ft x 18in —would in. itself be a reminder of the new conditions. The Centre secretary (Mr D. E. Wood) has | received a letter from the secretary of: the council recommending the adoption! of mats of "Puroid," which, according j to Auckland experience, lies perfectly j flat, and has been used with success. The mats will last two or three seasons, and which appear to be reasonable, are 1/- for single ply, and 1/3 for double ply. This does not inyolve a large outlay, and no doubt arrangements will be made for mats to be supplied by local firms. - THE AUSTRALIAN TRIP. The council secretary has sent out a note to centre secretaries, drawing attention to the projected Australian trip. Names of possible members of the team should be in by January 9, 1915, and the final selection will be made during the association tournament in Auckland in January. The bowlers are due in Sydney on April 1, and the actual date of sailing will be fixed later. HONORARY MEMBERS. The council has adopted a new bylaw that honorary or associate members of clubs will not be permitted to take part in tournaments unless by the consent of the council. It has hot been the practice in Canterbury to admit honorary members into the various match privileges, and probably the application has never been made. It is generally recognised that honorary members can only have the right of play on the green of the club to which they belong, and they do not take part in club or inter-club' competitions. BOWL TESTING. It is reported that the bowl-testing machines for the three principal centres outside Dunedin are now ready, and the i centres are to be asked to appoint offi- 1 cial testers. It is suggested that the j testers appointed should be sent to Dunedin to be coached by Mr Scott. The selection of bowl testers will give the centres some little thought. It is essentially a position which requires the right man, as the wrath of a.bowler whose bowls have been '' ruined" in the process of testing is a fearful and wonderful thing. It might be reasonable at this stage to suggest that the coaching of testers should be done in Christchurch. It would save Wellington, Auckland, and Christchurch men a journey to Dunedin, even though the jouth is not an unpleasant place to visit. CLUB SECRETARIES. The secretaries of various clubs are invited to paste the following list of the names and addresses of their confreres in their hats: — Akaroa: A. H. Westenra, Akaroa. Ashburton: W.
