SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

ASSOCIATION MEETING. ■:■ A general meeting of the North ICanfcerbury School Committees' Association was held in the Y.M.C.A. last evening. There was a large attendance of members, presided over by Mr J. Butterfield. An unofficial deputation (Messrs Evans from, the, Teachers ' Institute -waited on tlie. association and explained the ireport of a remark by Mr Evans which appeared in a- newspaper to the effeiit that the institute was opposed to school committees. A very satisfactory explanation of the error was given, and it was unanimously agreed that the statement be accepted. ' i -■-■:■- Mr C. H. Opie gave an explanation of the effeet of the new Education Bill. He did not- think that the Council of Education would be sufficiently representative of the different sections of the people. He also applied the same remark to the district eouneils. LINWOOD. /The usual monthly meeting of the Linwood School Committee was held on Wednesday night. Pxv.JHti.--Mersxs Denton (chairman), W. J. Jenkins, G. B. Gundry, B. Ellis, R. Carter, G.-Phil-lips, and H. F. Herbert. The new infant school will be available for the children in November next. It was decided, to plant potatoes ;in the spare ground, at the back of the new infant school. The headmaster reported that the sum of £5 12/6 had been -subscribed' by the children towards*the Ambulance Equipment Fund, and that the amount

had been handed over to the Board of Education. It-was hoped that the Education Board would help the committee financially to grade ground in front of the new infant school so as to be uniform with the main school. A letter was received congratulating the members of the committee for the way they had improved the gardens at the "side of the main school.
