WAIKARI NAVY LEAGUE

OPENING MEETING. A meeting was held at the Oddfellows' Hall, Waikari, last evening, to enrol members and open a branch of the Navy League. There was a good attendance, many coming from long distances. , Mr'G. Rutherford, of the Peaks, presided, and among those present were Mr C. J. Treleaven (secretary of the Christchureh Navy League) and the Rev. E. Eliot Chambers, of Lyttelton.

The president outlined the objects of the League, and stated that the League had undoubtedly been a great factor in securing the present strength and efficiency of the Imperial Navy. The Bev. E. Chambers gave a lecture on the history of the League during the last half century, and gave an interesting description of the various types of fighting ships. " His lecture was illustrated by lantern slides and kinema films, and enlivened by many appropriate and amusing anecdotes. Musical items were contributed by the Bev. Mr Kirkland and Mrs G. J. Yates, Miss Hoiles being accompanist. The ranks of the -League were strengthened by the addition of many, new members.
