Harold Paynes admitted having motored on the cycle track on the North Road, but said he did not know that he was breaking the by-laws by so doing. He was fined 5/- and costs. John Thos. Matson was fined 5/- and costs for driving a motor car over the crossing of High and Barbadoes Streets at an excessive speed. L. G. ■ J. Slade, who did not appear, was fined 10/- and costs for having ridden a motor cycle too fast over the in-

ersection of Colombo, Gladstone, and,Wordsworth Streets, Sydenham. For having driven a motor car along the Riccarton Road at an excessive speed, Alfred Win. MeConnell, wlid did not appear, but had admitted the offence to the police, was fined 10/- and costs. Mr V. J. Amodeo appeared for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The evidence showed that * the hprse was used for carting shingle from pits at Styx. Palmer owns it, and , Mehrtens was the driver. The latter had taken, some stuffing out* of the saddle above the wound, to case the latter, but a folded sack between the saddle and the animal "a back irritated the wound. Both defendants claimed to be considerate to horses. There were'no complaints about Palmer's other .horses —about a dozen. Each defendant was convicted and fined. 20/- and_eott«. SCHOOL ATTENDANCE. - For failing to fend- children to school regularly, Charlotte. Collard was fined 10/- and costs,'and Albert Donaldson was fined'-V- and costs.
