The German ..bombardment'-has set fire to part of Tournai, and the Germans have demanded a fine 0f£2,000,000. French; notables -have been taken as hostages. [Tournai, or Touruay, is a Belgian town, the centre of a district in the de-. partment, or county, of Hainaut, with a x>opulation of about. 36,000. It is situated on the River. Scheldt, 48 miles south-west of Ghent,, and-possesses tine quays and boulevards. . Its principal features are the superb mediaeval cathedral of Notre Dame, the Church of St. Quentin, the former Cloth Hall, now a museum, the Town Hall, once a monastery, and a line thirteenth century bridge. The town is very ancient, being at the time of the Roman domination the capital of the Belgie tribe of the Nervii, and later .the Royal seat of the Meroningians. It long belonged to France, and was a fortress used by the French in the early Avars on the northern borders.]
