TEN THOUSAND KILLED. THE DESTRUCTION OF TERMONDE LONDON, September 30. ■■, I The Germans, recommencing the endeavour to encircle Termonde, sent a thousand Uhlans into the town. '- , i. * After the Germans had had soinV suc--cess at Alost, the Belgians-cut off and captured 120 of them, and drove the rest from the town, where they had been firmly established for several weeks. Having retired three miles, the Germans bombarded and then 4>ned the town. -Great damage was done. The Germans also attacked Fort "Waelsen, using 17 heavy guns from Liege, requiring special concrete .beds. Two thousand Germans were killed in Saturday's fighting. z**. The Belgians estimate that 10,000 Germans were killed in days' fighting, mostly members of the Landwehr. jnany over 50: years of'age. Though Termonde was four times bombarded, and twice deliberately set . ablaze, the burgomaster *and his two daughters, aged 16 and'l7, remained in "town as voluntary nurses. Food is so scarce in Brussels that the German administration is finding it difficult to supply the 180,000 civilians . who have applied for rations.
