Captain Talbot - and Major Beattis arrived from Wellington yesterday. Visitors staying at Warner's Hotel include' Messrs A. G. R. 31ackett, of Auckland, and A. W. Iree, of Reef ton. Second Lieutenant J. F. G. Hislop, of the Btli (South Canterbury) Mounted Rifles, has "been appointed second lieu-* tenant in the Prince of Wales's Volunteers (South Lancashire Regiment). Amongst the visitors to Christchurch who arrived by the ferry steamer yesterdav morning are Messrs J. D. Scott, > of Wanganui, and H. A. Tustin, of Wellington. They are staying at the Clarendon. Dr C. M. Sheldon, the well-known American author, leaves this evening for the south. He will go south by the first express to-morrow and* return to Christchurch on September 24. On Friday night, at a general "meeting of the Canterbury University College Students' Association, a motion was passed, assuring Mr H. S. Richards, 8.A., of hearty and unanimous support in his nomination for this year 'a Rhodes Scholarship. Mr Richards, Who takes a very active and leading part in all the students' organisations, has had a brilliant scholastic career at Canterbury College.
