VISITING SCIENTISTS.

A DISTINGUISHED GROUP. The outbreak of war was responsible for the abandonment of the formal proceedings in Christchurch of the scientists who attended the British Association gathering in Australia. However, quite a number of the scientists have New Zealand in their itinerary, and there are now in Christchurch six gentlemep who are distinguished in their respective spheres of work. They •:,.' are being made heartily welcome by the ; members of the Canterbury Philosophical Institute, and are spending their ..vacation in congenial company and interesting surroundings. Among the passengers from the north to-day were Professor Richard T. Ely, who occupies the chair of Economics at the University of Wisconsin, U.S.A. He was accompanied by Professor C. ITranklin, of Stanford University, Cali- >.-. fnia, who occupies the chair of 5::: lemistry. During their stay in Wellington 'professor Franklin was the f'uest of Dr G. W. Harty, and Professor Uv was the guest of Viscount Kelburn. M. Allorge, of Paris, and Mr B. Hudson, of Sheffield (England) also arrived in Christchurch this morning from Wellington. They are geologists, and they are being introduced to different parts of Canterbury by their brother scient- ' ist, Mr R. Speight, the Curator of the Museum. They will probably leaA'e for Dunedin on Tuesday. Professors Ely and Franklin will visit Banks Peninsula to-morrow, and will go to the West Coast, via Arthur's Pass, on Tuesday.
