A civic welcome to the members of. the visiting English ladies' hockey team will be held in the City Council-Cham-bers on Wednesday next, at 11 a.m. The collection of New Zealand woods in the Museum has been overhauled and redressed, and is now favourable for exhibition. The walls of the Statuary Gallery have been distempered, and will be open to the public later in the ~ week. On Saturday evening the monthly, meeting of the Canterbury Fruit- . growers' Association was held, Mr F» Sisson presiding. The delegates to the" recent conference in Wellington made a lengthy report upon the business trans- ■' acted. The subscription for lady members of the association was "fixed at 1 5/> • A Press Association message from Wellington states that a Chinese named You was sentenced to.four months' imprisonment for-. a cowardly assault on a European woman who lived: with accused 's employer. You was also charged with assaulting Gee Poy at Christchurch on February 8, when, it was alleged, he used a knife. You was remanded to appear at :Cliristchurch on Monday. In consequence of the removal of the military camp from Addington to Sock-, burn, the Y.M.C.A. and C.E.M.S. will ,be put to some £4O expense in providing, marquees in which to carry on the work,, which they , have conducted in. the per-, manent building at the Show GiLands, ' and they ask for help to meet this expense. Their work has been much appreciated by officers arnd men- of the, Force, aAI their appeal is endorsed by Colonel Chaffey. Subscriptions may be sent to the Mayor or to the town clerk. < Copies of several patriotic-songs'.Jiave .been forwarded to -THE SUN. < "Sons ; of New Zealand, " the words by Stanley East, the music by Raymond Hope, was the first in the field. Its initial merit is that it is a'purely local production. The music and the words are appropriate to the occasion. Chandler • and Co., Ltd., send what they designate the "New Zealand Marseillaise," —■ " special words written to de L'lsles/ famous anthem. The original French words ,* , and their English translation are also given, with a simple setting for the pianoforte. The third song, "Thro' Boiling Drums," is the;.more pretentious— the music is by J. T. Macleod-■ - : smith, of Christchurch, to Tennyson'? ; well-known words, '' Thy Voice is Heard Through Boiling Drums." Strict l ly speaking this is not a patriotic song.
