The stables are up-to-date in every way, the building being two ' storeyed,, and the floors concreted throughout. Councillor F. J. Page, chairman of the Works Committee, called attention to the necessity there had been for demolishing old ramshackle buildings and ~ replacing them with something mora imposing and useful. The contract price for the structure fras" £1455, to which had to be adde'd expenditure for exca> -. vation, bringing the total cost up t( about £I7OO. It was estimated that tltf annual upkeep would be £144 10/-. against which a revenue of £l5O could be derived, including a weekly rent of 10/- for five stalls. Also, the Council would then have proper accommodation for their owit gear. All credit was due to Mr L. A. Stringer, town clerk, and Mr H. Barnard, borough ehi gineer, for what they had done in bring--hig the - project to a desired - consummation. The Mayor (Mr J. E. Webb) said that when the stables were completed ■ any risk to/the health of the Council's staff and the animals would be reduced to a minimum. The ratepayers had. sanctioned the work, and he realised that the money would therefore be-. '. money w T ell spent. His Worship then placed the stone in position, and de--1 clared it well and truly laid. After the ceremony the Mayor entertained those present at afternoon tea.
